    Customer Reviews:
Aren’t comics supposed to be enjoyable?
This is a great book if you are interested in Douglas Wolk. If you want to spend hours and hours reading what he thinks, being told what - in HIS opinion - is right and what is wrong, this is a great book.

If however you are genuinely interested in an enjoyable book about something that should be enjoyable, then avoid this book.

The first 30 or 40 pages are a struggle, filled with sentences containing “… comics I like …”, “I’d also …”, “… I’m talking about …”, ” I find …”, “I mean ….” and “I think …” making it one of the most egotistical pieces of writing I have ever come across.

Doug may think he knows a lot about comics, but he knows little about writing. I lost count of the number of times he started writing about something or someone, and then stops and tells the reader there is more in a later chapter.

There appeared to be redemption at around page 40, but it was short-lived and the book fell back into the “soapbox” style of the beginning.

I didn’t finish the book. Maybe I should have stuck with it, but I tried flicking forward a few pages at a time to see if the writing style improves, but was consistently disappointed.

    poorly written
I don’t know where to begin. This book is a mess. The writing is awash with redundancy, questionable grammar, and an annoying love of parenthesis. Too often he touches upon ideas in earlier chapters only to say that he will clear up any questions in later chapters, rather than clearly expressing his thoughts. An earlier review states that an editor should have cleaned the book up a little. I agree 100%. There are better books out there. Search them out.

Needed an editor to really polish it
There’s a lot to recommend this book. No matter how versed you are in comics (I’m not), you’re sure to find something new here about an amazingly complex medium.

But it’s got some annoying flaws. Particularly in the first third of the book, it can be seriously geeky when it should be introductory and welcoming. You may find yourself stumbling on what seems like fan jargon or expert knowledge. I didn’t(and still don’t) understand the stylistic differences between Jack Kirby’s early and late work. But that’s the kind of thing Wolk more or less assumes at times.

At best, the book has some wonderful visual analyses of comic panels and styles. That’s good, because most of the arguments require you to trust the visual descriptions. For a book about comics there aren’t nearly enough illustrations, and none in color. How about a companion website where readers could look at more than a few low-quality black and white reproductions?

But Wolk’s writing style gets annoying at this length. The book’s trying to be academic and authoritative, but do it with a casual writing style. It doesn’t work. Wolk often writes like a smart blogger; in other words, like someone who *really* needs an editor with a sharp red pencil. For example, he’ll use annoying terms like “wave at” or “poke at” to mean “show” and “examine.” He has a short “interview” between himself and Mr. Straw Man which feels like a clumsy way of avoiding constructing actual prose. Or he’ll discover a new ten-dollar word (like “somatic”) and use it two or three times in as many pages. He uses cliched writing (calling someone “a god-awful hack”) constantly.

Worst, nearly every page has at least two or three parenthetical phrases, which makes following arguments clunky. An editor would have deleted these as either truly side comments, or else rewritten them to be part of the argument.

You might not be bothered by these things, though I was. They get in the way of reading and following what’s actually a pretty subtle and worked-out argument.

Well written, informative, but title is misleading
I’m a casual comic reader and bought this book to learn more about comic culture and classics.

The author does a great job of talking about classic comics, authors, and illustrators. The first two chapters are also very interesting as they talk about the economics of comic distribution and how it has changed as more independent publishers have entered the market at various times in history.

The last half of the book is made of reviews of prominent authors and illustrators. It’s hard for me to read reviews of music, movies, or comics since 15 pages of prose about Will Eisner or Frank Miller isn’t a substitute for just reading their works.

Although they are very different, I would recommend buying Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art first, which does a much better job of explaining how comics work and what they mean. I would then read this book if you appreciate a prose-driven history of comics.

    Comics as literature
The problem with reviewing a book of criticism is the endless path it can lead you on. After all, my review itself can be critiqued in the comments area below, and those comments can be analyzed, and so on. Eventually, the main topic may be lost in all the reviews of reviews of reviews. Such is the peril that I am undertaking with Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics.

Plenty of people view comics rather negatively as shallow entertainment for children. Certainly, if you look at the standard comics page in a newspaper, the few quality strips are islands in a sea of mediocrity. As Wolk points out, however (and what many comics fans already know), comics are just a medium like television or books, and there’s a lot more to it than kid stuff.

The first portion of Reading Comics looks at the medium as a whole: its history, its fan culture, what it does well and not so well and what makes the comic form unique. Actually, the term “comics” is not really that great as many comics are actually quite serious; on the other hand, other terms - including the often-used “graphic novels” - have their own problems, typically either also being descriptively inadequate or overly pretentious. When one thinks of comic books (or, as Wolk annoyingly calls them, “pamphlets”), the one genre that stands out is the superhero comic. Wolk gives superheroes some acknowledgement, but wants to look beyond that limited area.

The second part of the book looks at various comic artists and writers; often times, one person serves both functions. Among the more well-known writers/artists discussed are Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Marv Wolfman, Art Spiegelman and Steve Ditko. Other less commonly known names are also reviewed such as Hope Larson and Kevin Huezinga. Wolk’s choices are of generally significant works, but he is up front about his own biases in selecting material.

Wolk sometimes come off a bit snobby in his discussions, but he usually keeps any elitism toned down. If you’re reading this book, chances are you are familiar with much of the work that’s reviewed and will not always agree with Wolk’s opinions. Overall, however, even when I disagreed with him, he provided good arguments for his views. If you’re a comics fan, and you want to start looking critically at the medium, your best introduction would probably be Scott McCloud, particularly with Understanding Comics and Drawing Comics. McCloud, however, focuses more on the “mechanics” of comics rather than particular artists. If you want to delve into comics more in depth - especially as a form of literature - Reading Comics does the job well.

    Awsome Video
I have always been a very big Journey fan. However I did not realize there was a Journey before Steve Perry. To me SP will always be the “voice” of Journey. I lost touch of them in later years and didn’t even realize that they had had other lead singers since him. Since rediscovering them lately I have watched many a youtube video checking out the various lead singers. I must admit, I really really like Steve Augeri and wish he would have been able to stick with them. I have only had this DVD a few days and have watched it over and over and for a 54 year old woman that is saying something. I absolutely love it. Augeri just fits the personna I think for this group. To bad he is no longer with them. Buy this and enjoy, enjoy.

    Journey 2001 Musical DVD
I got to see Journey on stage twice and getting this DVD was like being back there watching them in person. Steve Augeri is such a pleasure to watch. He puts a lot of himself into the show and makes you feel like you are part of the show. Journey is a great group of guys, pouring their souls out in ther music. A must have DVD, we watch it a lot.

    VERY good!
Since we’re talking about my favorite band of ALL time, I’m going to be a little bias. The content is excellent! The sound quality is EXCELLENT! Steve Augeri is a great singer (though Mr. Perry is THE BEST male vocalist of ALL TIME!). I highly recommend this concert DVD to Journey fans.

    Just F A N T A S T I C!
Received this DVD a few days ago… I was blown away by Augeri’s performance, a natural. Been listening to Journey since Perry joined, yes it’s a pitty he had to leave the band, but Augeri is the best replacement one can ever hope for, so all you winers complaining about I don’t what, stop wining! Everything is superb, the old AND new guys (Augeri and Castronovo on drums). I even ripped the songs from the DVD and made a CD for my car, that’s how much I liked it! So, if you like Journey, BE GOOD TO YOURSELF and get this live DVD, you wont go wrong here, period.

If You Love Journey You’ll love This!!!!!!
The sound and the songs are fantastic!!!!They keep going when you think it’s over!!!I highly recommend!!!!

If your a Journey Fan There is no possible way you can be dissapointed!!!!!!

    Customer Reviews:
DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE A NEWER IPOD!
I just got an Ipod Touch, and video out DOES NOT work with this dock. I don’t understand why it doesn’t work but it’s a major bummer!

No Video Out on New iPods
I had a 5th Gen iPod and everything worked great. Now I have a iPod Classic. Video out no longer works.

Careful. This product is obsolete. :(

    Hasn’t broke yet…
More than I wanted to spend to hook up the ipod to the stereo, but it’s a better quality sound than the alternative (i.e. regular 3mm plug or FM transmission) I guess I could have purchased an Apple Airport, and I still might, but this will do until then. I like the look of the Kensington 33350 and it’s footprint is nice and small. The wierd little built-in remote holder thing is a little corny and cumbersome. For example, if you were going to use the remote (have you ever tried scrolling for an artist or song from 20 feet away? Good luck!), why would you store it right next to the device you’re trying to control from afar? And it doesn’t really sit in the holder very well, you have to tinker with it in order to make it stay…then when you slightly bump it, it falls off. Yeah, these are not really huge issues, just things that have been noticed by everyone in the household and a few guests. (We found we only use the remote to power on the device and/or skip songs.)

The only real concern I have about this dock is the way the ipod sits in the stand. Look at the picture…see how it is not resting on anything…just standing there whilst plugged into the thing in the butt? Well, if you choose to fiddle with the ipod sans remote controller, then you are pressing on the ipod scroll wheel, thus pushing the ipod back creating lots-o-pressure on the butt connecting thing. It feels like it will eventually wear out. So pretty much anyone who tries to select music in this fashion gets a 30 second “be careful now” lecture from me. That gets old.

Otherwise…it’s pretty cool. And it hasn’t broke yet!

    dave

    Feels like quality
This is just what I hoped for — small, hefty weight so it stays where you put it, sophisticated look, and it works well. The remote works fine for me, none of the problems reported in some reviews. The metal bar is not just decorative — the remote sits nicely there when not in use. In all, very pleased I ordered this nifty unit made by Kensington.

    Works Great
It works great. No problems hooking it up or getting it working. The remote works fine. Sounds good.

    Customer Reviews:
    Not as good as advertised
OK-So I actually based my decision to purchase this MFC printer on reviews I found on this site. I found it quite easy to set up and my Vista program had no trouble connecting. The issue I have with it is the color quality. All the reviews I read said the print and color quality was very good to excellent. My color appears washed out aqnd the blues are practically non existant. I’ve tried to print images with vibrant blues and purples that have come out muddy browns and greens. The reds and yellows have appeared as washed out and faded. I haven’t performed any in depth trouble shooting yet, and it may be an adjustable problem. But, I am rather disappointed to date.

Decent Printer, lousy documentation, so-so with Vista
Prints very nicely. Scans well. Once I jumped through the install nightmare (see below) it connected to my network.

It came with 2 install disks, one labeled “MFL-Pro Suite” one labeled “Vista drivers.” There was no documentation on the install procedure for Vista. Not even on the “Vista drivers” cd, just a file called “instructions” that said “put the disk in the drive, go to such and such folder [which didn't exist], and click ’start.exe.’” If I hadn’t known that I wouldn’t have been able to find the instructions. I went online and was able to download the Vista manual. It took forever to install, like half an hour, and the instructions didn’t correspond to anything that actually happened. Moreover, the promised scanning and OCR software did not install. Couldn’t find it on the disk. Went to the brother site, couldn’t find it there. Went to the brother support page, it was offline. Called brother support. The phone number was disconnected.

I can scan using the image capture from photopaint, and I’ve rarely tried to use OCR, but I’m rather miffed. I’d have rated it lower, except of course that all this trouble was really caused by Microsoft foisting this nightmare of unstable bloatware called Vista on us.

Outstanding value for home and home office use
We purchased the 440CN last week for home and home office use. Our main need is to replace an older USB-only scanner with a networked scanner that can be easily shared among several users, and we also needed a light duty, low volume stand-alone copier. The 440CN was a breeze to install, the construction is outstanding (better than most current SOHO printers/scanners), and the driver install, config and functionality is superior (much better than our past experiences with Epson and HP printers). We use computers heavily, and of all the peripherals we have ever purchased, this device is one of the best values we have ever gotten. We are delighted!

Like all printers, the 440CN allows you to choose the output quality for each print/copy, and if you choose low or medium, the quality is reduced (exactly as is done with other brands), but is faster and uses less ink. Of course, if you can also choose to print in high quality as well, in which case the printer takes longer and produces a better quality result. Using inkjet paper instead of copier paper (and telling the print setup that you’re doing so) also clearly enhances print quality — as is true with all inkjet printers.

Our experience with this device is that most reviews of it have been overly critical. Yes, if I were desiring to print photos or outbound marketing materials, I’d get a different printer designed specifically to product more-vibrant colors than this machine can produce. However, if you’re looking for a home and home office printer for average personal use, this machine is entirely satisfactory in print quality, and fantastic in overall value because of its broad functionality.

    To expensive
This is a freat multifunction printer but it is too expensive, I found the same product locally for $88.

    LOVE IT!
I absolutly Love this product! It is, in my opinion, the best you can buy for the money! And the ink is very reasonable too!

This is a great gift for those “hard-to-buy-for” friends and relatives. Like the classic 8-ball, you’ll find yourself sitting and asking it questions for far too much time. However, this little snot spouts off sarcastic answers like “Yeah, and I’m the Pope.” Too funny!
