Customer Reviews:
Good but confusing pictures
My 16-month old daughter loves this book, and it has been her favorite for some time. My husband and I both speak Spanish, so we are always looking for good bilingual books for her. I like this one, but the pictures can be confusing. Each page has a shape by itself and then a picture of something using that shape. For example, circle and balloon. My main problem is with the triangle. The picture is supposed to be a butterfly and the word on that page is “wing” and “ala.” You really can’t tell that it’s a butterfly. My daughter is confused, so now she says “ala” everytime she sees a triangle, not realizing that she’s saying “wing.” Also, the crescent shape and the moon picture look exactly the same, so it’s hard to explain to her why one is called a crescent and the other is called a moon. The author could have made the moon yellow instead of blue, especially since the moon really isn’t blue. Otherwise, I like the simplicity of this book. It really holds the attention of younger children who don’t want a lot of words on each page.
Error-filled again
Yet again Ms. Emberley has created a book out of a dictionary, and again, it has errors. For example, she calls a square a “cuadro,” which is plain wrong. A “cuadro” is a painting whereas a “cuadrado” is a square.
These books are certainly pretty to look at and are geared to entertain children, but their poor, error-filled content make them a poor choice to actually teach Spanish.
Simple but good
This book is very simple, but right now my 12 month old son picks it every day without fail. He even laughs at “square”, I am not sure why. I got it as a gift from a friend who had to go buy one for her son because he always wanted it from the library. Neither of us are Spanish speakers - that might be a nice feature, but the book works fine in English.
This book succeeds where some others fail
I appreciate this book as well as the “My Colors” book by the same author because they take the time to seperate shapes and colors. In some series, the two are combined and I feel that they should be taught seperately.
A great series for early language acquisition
I have been using this entire series with my son since he was born, and he is now 14 months. He loves the pictures and turning the pages. The books use the format of one word per page and it gives both the English and Spanish form of the word. This is a great series for early language acquisition.
